Released in 1987, the Air Trainer 1 was unlike anything seen in the sneaker industry.
The shoe was designed by Tinker Hatfield to perform multiple activities, both on court and in the gym, and helped establish the cross-training movement of the 1980’s.
Once the Nike Air Trainer 1 officially became available to consumers, athletes could now play, lift weights and run in one shoe.
Prior to the official release of the Air Trainer, the shoe gained popularity when tennis legend John McEnroe won several tournaments while wearing prototypes of the style.
